Leadership Lesson #1 Taking People With You

After nearly 40 years in leadership I wanted to reflect on some of the lessons I have learnt. These lessons are for those in any area of leadership: school, commerce, church, sport, home. Lesson #1 is Taking People With You. This is a fundamental skill. If you are not taking people with you in leadership you are just going for a walk on your own. Most organisations are not run by a dictator but by a skilled leader who communicates his\her vision\thoughts clearly, often and in all kinds of scenarios. Communicate where you want to take the organisation with the SLT (Senior Leadership Team), involve them in the conversations: "This is what I think...what do you think...?" Demonstrate you value the comments of others. You are much more likely to get leadership buy in when the Team feel part of the process and part of the decision. Leak vision all the time, drop teasers all the time, have conversations all the time so when the change of direction comes no-one is taken by surprise - you have taken people with you on the journey.
