Leadership Lesson #2 Set the Culture

Richard Branson uses the axiom "Culture eats vision for breakfast". Whatever the vision of your organisation, culture matters more and the culture comes from the top. What culture do you want in your organisation\team\staff room...? What are your values - this will shape the culture. If you value being the best no matter the cost - that will shape the culture and (negatively) impact the workforce. If you value customer\patient care above everything that will shape the culture. If you as a leader value warmth, approachability, grace-filled, non-judgemental, open leadership with a sense of humour that will affect the culture of the organisation. Creating the right culture when leading an organistion of volunteers, like a church or charity, is even more critical when people are giving of their free-time. Appreciation, honouring, encouragement, frequent expressions of gratitude must be part of the culture. This will ensure volunteers\paid staff remain in post longer and are happier.
