"We are praying...fingers crosssed"?!

The cardiac arrest of Fabrice Muamba on Saturday during a Premier League match has rocked the footballing world. What is interesting too is the way in which his critical condition in hospital has caused prayer to be raised in the national conscience. "God is in control. Please pray for Fabrice" Tweets his finance; one picture in a national newspaper today shows the Man Utd team before kick off applauding Fabrice with the heading: "Man Utd players pray for Fabrice"; after scoring for Chelsea Cahill's T-shirt read "Pray 4 Fabrice"; "our thoughts and prayers are for Fabrice and his family" says one Premier League manager, whilst another says: "We are praying...fingers crossed".
So which is it - a vain superstitious hope with fingers crossed, clapping equating to praying, a sentimenatl clutching at straws or asking God to heal and raise up a seriously ill man? Does prayer make any difference?
