Mark's review of The Power of the Dog on Netflix.

This is a stunningly beautiful film. The long slow shots of the Montana mountains (in New Zealand actually), the cattle drive, the long grass in the wind, the lingering looks, even the slow washing of hands make for a visual feast. A ride 'em, shoot 'em, string 'em up cowboy movie this is not. In fact, not one shot is fired. Not one act of physical violence. Plenty of verbal and emotional. Benedict Cumberpatch puts in the performance of his life as an outwardly brash, abusive cowboy, inwardly bleeding, dealing with deep unhappiness and emotional battles. If you are looking for a cowboy movie with lots of action - this is not that. If you are looking for a slow, thoughtful, beautifully shot movie that addresses issues of sexuality, loss, grief, love and marriage in a period drama - this is it.Jane Campion the director has done a brilliant job. My guess is a bag of Oscars. Did I mention it was slow...?
