Shoemakers on the move (but not yet)

Shoemakers Christian bookshop has been operating in Newbury, supported by the churches, in The Arcade since 2004. Since that time it has grown into a bookshop and coffee shop serving gluten free lunches and cakes. The name comes from Christopher Shoemaker - one of the Newbury martyrs. He was burned at the stake in 1518 in Enbourne Rd Newbury for reading The Bible. An engraved stone by the roadside records the events of that cruel day. So a bookshop selling Bibles in his memory was born. This month Shoemakers was due to move from its present home to St Nics church until a future home can be found. But a last minute extension and a surprise gift has meant Shoemakers will remain in The Arcade until September. Shoemakers will continue selling Bibles. How many other small, independant town centre shops have managed 19 years...?
