What I learnt about depression this week

I went to see a friend this week struggling with depression. I learnt some things from him about what is helpful and what is not in dealing with those with depression. Some are surprising:
Clinical depression is an illness requiring medication and professional treatment
Don't try and fix the person
Don't offer advice like "you should exercise more"
Don't ask "how are you?"
Don't pray with them but pray for them
Do give a hug and say "I love you" or "great to see you"
Do keep in touch but don't be put off if there is little in return
Do offer a space for them just to be (but don't expect lots of conversation)
Do be a loving non-judgemental sensitive friend
Remember the partner may be the main carer and needs support too
