Trying to get my head round Greece

My cousin lives in Greece. One of those romantic tales of going on holiday 25 years ago, falling in love and not coming back. I feel for her and her family. She has 2 jobs to try and feed her family. I am trying to understand the plight of our European friends. Is it true Greek civil servants were pensioned off at 50? Is it true that a region of Greece declared themselves blind in order to obtain disability allowance whilst working? Is it true that corruption and tax evasion were commonplace? Is it true that those working in dangerous professions were pensioned off at 50 (including hairdressers!)? Is it true that 40% of the population were declared self-employed so as to avoid paying tax? Is it true that successive Greek governments borrowed excessively and recklessly like a giant ponzi scheme? Should the rest of Europe bail out Greece after decades of economic mis-management? Meanwhile, my cousin, like millions of Greeks, feels trapped, helpless and struggles...
Fair Greece! Sad relic of departed worth!
Immortal, though no more! Though fallen, great!   Lord Byron
