The Big Silence
On the w\e Nigel said to me I "must" watch The Big Silence on BBC i-player. On the recommendation of my friend, I did. Or rather I watched the first part of 3. I will watch the other 2 because, as Nigel said, it is good. It is about 5 people from very different walks of life who agree to go on an 8 day silent retreat to see what happens...God sneaks up on them.
A monk from Worth Abbey helps them prepare and makes some helpful, but not altogether surprising, observations about our business, constant noise and how little attention we give to looking after our soul. In the monastic tradition of course, silence is a daily spiritual discipline. In one cameo the monk says:
"If you were told by your doctor that you had to exercise for 20 minutes a day or you would die - you would. Similarly, if we do not spend time looking after our soul (in daily silence) it dies."
Interesting stuff.
Do you have a daily discipline of silence?
