Parenting Adult Children Part 1
They aren't many books on this, or much written at all, but most of us face it...How to be a Parent to an Adult Child. Is there such a thing? Is that an oxymoron?
The thing is, you never stop being a parent. You don't stop being a parent when they leave home or go to university, or get married. You still think about them, worry about them, and as best you can still be there for them. Occasionally they need you...often about the car, food or money!
But how do we do it? How do we best parent our adult child?
Should we parent at all?
We train them for 18 years to be independant, to make good choices, to take responsibility...
Would it better if we just stepped back and say "You are on your own now kid"?
We watch as they stumble (as they always did). We want to catch them when they fall (as we always did). We can anticipate the fall. But now it is different. They have left home. They have left. How do we adjust as parents? How do we cope? How should we be?
This series will look at these questions and others. Let's begin the conversation and help each other...
