Fostering...what I am learning.

It was Bev's idea really. I supported her. She wanted to foster. She was ahead of me, as usual. The process of being accepted to foster is long - 6 interviews about almost everything. I wasn't sure I would get through. Then panel - a panel of 3 social workers who then ask more questions. We have fostered 5 young people for up to a year each. The term used by our agency, Step by Step, is Supported Lodgings. The young people are often from broken or dysfunctional backgrounds. The most important thing is to provide a safe, quiet place for them. I have learnt there are a lot of children in care, a lot of children in need and more foster homes are required. Fostering is not easy, often challenging, but also rewarding. I have learnt that whilst children may have had turbulent upbringings, there is always a seam of gold to be found. A gift, a personality, an ability, an interest, a sense of humour to be found and encouraged. I have learnt that encouragement is what many children have lacked growing up. I have learnt that having regular meals is what some children have lacked. I have learnt that it can be great fun fostering a teenager. Going on holiday. Watching them smile and laugh as they go in the sea; as they begin to engage in conversation; as they begin to cook for themselves; as they go to school or college for the first time; being there for important life moments or to catch them when they fall. To show love. I have learnt that speaking softly and gently is powerful; giving space, giving time, being patient.... I am learning a lot.
