Book Review: Letters to the Church by Francis Chan.

Someone in my church gave me this book to read. "I wonder why?" I thought. I can see now. Farncis Chan is disillusioned. He is disillusioned with the church. Or rather the church in America. He is disillusioned with big ministries, big buildings, big budget entertain me church. This book is a loud shout to return to something like the church in the New Testament: small, worshipping, Bible reading, mission orientated church. And Chan has done it. He turned his back on leading his megachurch in America and has started afresh in San Francisco. Small. There are plenty of personal stories, anecdotes and Bible passages here. In the later chapters Chan really gets into his stride when describing what the church looks like in Africa, China and the Middle East. No comfy church here, but plenty of passion, cost, suffering, fruit and growth. His chapter on children (releasing them not teaching them "hand motion songs") is another big shout. The last 2 chapters are worth the book: Unleashed and Church Again. Get ready for lots of shouting...
