Parenting with Love and Logic
I am often on the look out for help/new resources with parenting. Even with 2 children having left home and 2 teenagers at home I still need help! This series of books Love and Logic are a good and thoughtful resource for parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles or anyone who works with children. The writers cleverly identify types of parenting which most of us can relate to: Helicopter Parenting - where you fly in and rescue them, or Sergeant Major parenting where you give the orders. The premise of the books however is that our job is to raise responsible adults who will make good and right choices and take responsibility for those choices. So the writers advocate Consultative Parenting whereby, from an early age, we teach children to take responsibility for their choices. For instance, instead of saying "It's cold outside, put your coat on", try: "It's cold outside, what coat would you like to wear?" That way the child learns to choose and take responsibility. Interesting.
