On Friday I, together with 8 others from the church Pastoral Team, went on a training day at Waverley Abbey House Farnham: Helping Troubled Marriages, lead by Heather and Ian Churchill. I am committed to continued training for the Team especially in these days of endemic marital breakdown. It was a very good day indeed. One of the helpful insights of the day was understanding how our childhood, how we were brought up and our family background affects our own relationships and marriage. Identifying those family traits can be helpful in understanding ourselves and our partner. Sometimes for newly weds for example expectations of how Christmas is celebrated can be a challenge (presents in the morning or after Christmas dinner?).
Some of the other helpful tools of the day included understanding the Love Languages (quality time, gifts, acts of service, touch, words of affirmation) - once again understanding your own preferred Love Language and that of your partner can be both helpful and releasing. A good day not just for helping others but helping me and Bev too.
