After the national euphoria of the Olympics which offered much celebration and illustration for the previous Sundays, this Sunday we were given an emotional roller coaster ride. Lazarus spoke on "What on earth is happening in the Middle East"? It was very humbling and challenging to hear reports of brothers and sisters in the region suffering terrible persecution, imprisonement, loss of family, loss of homes and property, hunger and displacement. There were amazing stories too of life changing encounters with Christ, amazing miracles and steadfastness to the literal end.
Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Afghanistan etc were in some way covered in a mesmerising sweep of the geo-political and religious landscape. I am still haunted by the figure of over 100,000 Christians being killed each year for their faith. Humbling.
