Green woodpeckers and deer
I live in a beautiful part of the country - in Surrey. In fact the area where I live is called Surrey Heath - because of the extensive Heathland. The heathland, sometimes called Barrossa Common, starts 200 m from my home and extends towards the Crown Estate and on through the Bracknell Forest. At this time of year the autumnal colours are magnificent, so much so that it was featured in a BBC TV programme on Countryfile last week. You can watch it on BBC i-Player: Counytryfile 11th November.
Amongst the joyous sites are green woodpeckers. Often whilst walking the dog I will stumble across a green pecker - they are ground feeders, usually spotted in pairs with a distinctive call and looping flight. Another treat is wild deer. Shy but beautiful. The site of such deer demands that you stand still, are silent and stare in wonder.
Walking the common is good exercise and re-creation. Surrounded by God's creation is such a tonic. So get out there - enjoy what God has made. You may even see a green woodpecker.
