For my birthday a friend gave me the book Affluenza by Oliver James. I am so glad he did. Affluenza is the culmination of 3 years study by the author on the causes of depression and anxiety in the affluent parts of the world. The richest countries have the highest rates of “affluenza” because we are not content and feel the need to always have more material possessions. Oliver James offers some refreshing anti-virus to the epidemic: staying with your partner and working at your relationship (divorce costs too much); spending more time with your children; being content with your home; not getting into debt; resisting the pressure to always have more and have the latest.
Simple really.
